    INJURIES:

In the event of injury or illness, NO contestant will be permitted to continue the competition without approval of the Chief Medical Officer, whose decision is final and not subject to appeal.

CONCUSSION MANAGEMENT and UNCONSCIOUSNESS of COMPETITOR:

USA WRESTLING NATIONAL EVENTS COORDINATOR will appoint a designated Medical Services Coordinator and/or Tournament Medical Director for each USA Wrestling International, National and Regional Event. This must be a medical professional licensed or Certified Health Care Provider. All on-site medical decisions by the Tournament Medical Coordinator/Physician Director are not subject to appeal or protest and are made in the best interest of the health and well being of the wrestler.

All competitors in a USA Wrestling International, National and Regional event must receive a copy of the rule related to Medical Coordinator/Physician Director and Concussion Management Protocol prior to competition.

    USA WRESTLING CONCUSSION MANAGEMENT PROTOCOL:

If a wrestler becomes unconscious or referee, coach, athlete or medical provider suspects a wrestler may have received a concussion; the match must be stopped and a tournament medical staff person will assess the wrestler. The tournament medical staff will have unlimited time to determine if the wrestler can continue. (Change from USA Rules to UWW rules).

If the wrestler is allowed to continue the match; after completion of the match the wrestler must be escorted to the Medical area and must be given a recognized concussion evaluation which is documented by tournament medical staff. The tournament medical staff will complete a YELLOW Medical Alert and until the wrestler is granted GREEN Alert by tournament medical staff the wrestler is on a Medical Hold.

If the Tournament Medical staff determine the wrestler has a concussion or was determined unconscious by the Tournament Medical Staff on the Mat or post match the following procedure must be followed:

    - RED Alert is completed and Medical Staff submit to Pairings Official

    - Tournament Medical Staff will provide written documentation of findings of Standardized Concussion evaluation and signs and symptoms of wrestler.

    - Tournament Medical Staff will determine specific acute care plan. If wrestler is under the age of 18, the coach or club representative will notify parent/legal guardian as soon as possible of incident.

    - If Tournament Medical Staff does not send wrestler to Hospital via EMS; Tournament Medical Staff will provide parent, coach and club representative with USA Wrestling Post Concussion Care Recommendation. Prior to release of wrestler the Tournament Medical Staff will complete a serial evaluation process and upon release a final symptom checklist. Under no circumstance does the Medical Staff release a concussed wrestler without transfer of care to a responsible adult with specific instructions. All minor age wrestlers with a concussion must be released to the designated adult assigned by parent/legal Guardian.

    - No concussed wrestler will return to competition without a written return to play document from a trained concussion medical professional (as identified by State Law) excluding a parent of the wrestler and cannot return for a minimum of 24 hours ( unless State Law requires longer recovery period). Ideally USA Wrestling recommends a multi-step and multiple discipline return to play procedure. See Post Concussion Instructions.

    - If a wrestler is choked out and rendered unconscious during competition the Tournament Medical Staff will determine return to play and written documentation of signs and symptoms must be submitted to National Events Director.

    - If choked out wrestler is not permitted to return to competition; a standardized Concussion test must be administered and findings submitted; a RED Alert is completed and submitted to Pairings. A YELLOW Alert or RED Alert does not remove a wrestler from tournament but does not allow wrestler to compete in tournament.

    - Once Tournament is completed, Pairings Official submits all RED Alerts to National Events Director and is available to the Medical Staff of the Next National Events.

    - A wrestler that has RED Alert from a USA Wrestling International, National or Regional Event must present a Return to Play Form from a Physician (MD or DO) to USA Wrestling Tournament Medical Check to be cleared for the next USA Wrestling tournament. The National Events Director must maintain a list of all RED Alerts issued at International, National and Regional event hosted by USA Wrestling.

  • UNIFORMS & GEAR

The shorts shall not be excessively baggy or have pockets, buttons, or snaps.

Girls MUST wear a Women’s Cut Singlet.

    2024-2025 Folkstyle Girls Rules:

Approved by USA Wrestling at 2024 State Leaders' Summit

Modification to Rules Clarification (Girls Divisions at Folkstyle Tour of America/Folkstyle Nationals)

In the girls divisions at the Folkstyle Nationals and Folkstyle Tour of America events, the beginning of wrestling in regulation (1, 2 and 3 periods) and overtime shall begin in the neutral position.

    Clarification for Neutral Start:

    • At the end of each period, the wrestlers will begin the subsequent period in the standing/ neutral position.

    • In the event of an injury while wrestling is happening in the “top/ bottom” or “par terre” position, Wrestling will resume in the referee's position unless nearfall points have been awarded in that sequence. If nearfall points have been awarded, wrestling will resume standing.

    • In the event of overtime, the first period of overtime will begin in the neutral position, as is the current rule. If no scoring happens, the wrestlers will wrestle 2 30 second periods. The modification proposed is that these 30 second periods will be conducted similarly to the Freestyle “Activity period”. The coin is flipped, and that wrestler chooses if they wish to be “on the clock” first. If they choose this and no scoring happens in the 30 seconds, their opponent will be awarded 1 point. The same is done for the 2nd 30 second period with the other wrestler “on the clock”. At the end of the 2nd 30 seconds, the point will be awarded if no scoring has occurred and that wrestler, the one “scoring last” will be declared the winner. This allows for strategy to be used in selecting offense or defense in the 1st 30 seconds.

    • EXAMPLE: In overtime, any score in the 1-minute period, will award the match to the wrestler earning that score.

    • As is the rule from NFHS, the entire 30 seconds in each of the 2nd and 3rd overtime periods will be wrestled to completion unless there is a fall. If the wrestler "on the clock" does not score, 1 point will be awarded to their opponent regardless of any score by the other wrestler - stalling. step out, or takedown points will be awarded as earned.

Step-out - Approved by USA Wrestling at 2023 State Leaders’ Summit
Modification to Folkstyle Rules In the girls divisions at the Folkstyle Nationals and Folkstyle Tour of America events.

Step-out rule - there will be 1 point awarded if from a neutral position (with neither wrestler on the mat with one or two knees touching in a down position) the action goes out of bounds based on NFHS guidelines. All attempts by both wrestlers should be made to wrestle aggressively and in the center of the mat. The step-out point will be awarded to the opponent of the wrestler who goes out of bounds first with two or more supporting points.

    Clarifications:

    • This rule differs from the NFHS rules for being “inbounds”. Once the step-out criteria is met the opponent will be awarded 1 point. If there is a step-out by the defensive wrestler and the offensive wrestler immediately completes a scoring action, that action will be scored the step-out point will NOT be scored. The official should not sound the whistle for the step-out and allow the offensive action to score.

    • Once the wrestler steps out of bounds with two supporting points, that wrestler cannot return from out of bounds to score points. The whistle will sound and 1 point is awarded to the opponent and wrestling will resume in the middle of the mat.

    • If the defensive wrestler leaves the mat under attack to avoid being scored on, the step-out point will be scored plus 1 point for fleeing the mat.

    • If the offensive wrestler uses a straight arm “push-out”, the opponent is NOT penalized. This is considered stalling under the NFHS rules and should be penalized accordingly.

    • If the defensive wrestler stands in an attempt to gain and escape point, is driven out of bounds, without gaining an escape point, there will NOT be a step out point awarded. (Neutral wrestling was not established)

    • If the defensive wrestler stands, is awarded the escape point, and then steps out of bounds, the step out point will be awarded.

    • Step outs points are recorded “SO-1” in a scorebook and will be a “+1” in Trackwrestling. Step out points are NOT to be considered penalty points.

USA Wrestling Performance Index (PIN): Separation used for all brackets. Click here for more information about PIN

    • The USA Wrestling Performance Index (PIN) measures consistency over time and rates the probability of a person winning against an opponent based on their bodies of work.

    • A person with a higher PIN is considered more likely to beat someone with a lower PIN and the closer the PINs are the closer the probability gets to 50/50 chances.

    • This does not reward the one time win or head-to-head over an opponent; what it does is rewards consistency over time. If you consistently beat people with higher PINs, you will gain PIN points to surpass them in index given that you do not lose to lesser competition along the way.
